Welcome to Part 2 of our 3-part series with Marika. Marika is an Ikaria local about to turn 88. Her quality of life far exceeds that of many people in their 50s and 60s, and we have been fortunate enough to spend an hour with her on her patio, flanked by her family and friends.
On this episode, we discuss Marika’s attitudes towards food, including her daily diet, the use of herbal teas, remedies for common ailments such as bee stings, and a whole lot more.
We hope you enjoy the infectious personality of Marika!
We are returning to Ikaria in 2020. To find out more about the trip and to apply, go to www.100notout.com

100NO 335: Think Global Act Local | Home Is Where The Heart Is
Monday Sep 02, 2019
Monday Sep 02, 2019
Damian has just moved house, and not only has he moved house, but he has left the rent game and become an owner-occupier.
What does it feel like moving from a rental to your own home? And what are the benefits of loving not only your home, but the community you love to be around?
If you care about local issues and want the local public toilet fixed, what does that mean?
In a world we care so much about global issues and sometimes so little about local ones, this episode attempts to define how to navigate “think global act local”.
This is our last recording before we head to Greece to host our 100 Not Out Longevity Experience. This is our third time to Ikaria – the island where people forget to die – and already have registrations for a 2020 Longevity Experience. To find out more about 2020 and to apply, head to www.100notout.com

Val loves travelling Australia and has been everywhere from Cape York to the Kimberleys, Tassie to Perth and everywhere in between. She has also travelled to USA, NZ and Sth Pacific on cruises.
Yet another example of someone who is determined to make the rest of their life the best of the life, enjoy this chat with Val Lennox.

100NO 333: Damo has lost his voice. Is his body telling him something?
Monday Aug 19, 2019
Monday Aug 19, 2019
Damo’s lost his voice. It’s the third time in four years. Is there’s a deeper meaning behind all of this, or is the Melbourne winter causing Damo’s laryngitis to act as a protective defense mechanism?
With The Wellness Summit just behind us – did Damo’s voice return in time? If not, why not? And are we at risk of over-analysing something which may not be necessary?
The body’s symptoms can often be attributed to something going on in our lives. Tight and sore necks are often related to stress, as is shoulder pain. Low back pain is often an effect of some form of mental or emotional stress.
But at the same time, wellness enthusiasts can be quick to over dramatise their symptoms.
A fascinating chat on this episode of 100 Not Out.
On a practical note –
Damo’s regime for his laryngitis –
5 Mushroom extract
Herbs containing licorice, slippery elm, Andrographis and astragalus
Vitamin C
Probiotics
Manuka honey and lemon drink
Clearly the above is not a health recommendation.

Julian Prendergast is a state swimming champion in his age group. He is 79, a father of five children and a grandfather of 8. Julian lost his wife Barb to cancer seven years ago. He hasn’t let his challenges in life define him negatively; instead he is allowed every challenge to make him stronger.
Having been a self-confessed slob almost 30 years ago, Julian has been swimming four times per week and staying active every since an ad in the local paper back in the 1990s encouraged him to return to the pool.
This fascinating interview on purpose, movement, grief, family and love will inspire you to make the rest of your life the best of your life!

100NO 330: Do We All Have Equal Opportunity To Live Our Best Life?
Monday Jul 29, 2019
Monday Jul 29, 2019
If we started our lives seeking the most fulfilling lives and taking each opportunity that arose, would we all start to see that life is an incredible gift?
Given humanity’s tendency to accept mediocrity and survival, do we all have equal opportunity to live our best lives? Does the environment we find ourselves in dictate inequality in relation to our opportunity to create our ideal life?
These big questions and more get discussed on this open and vulnerable conversation of 100 Not Out.

100NO 328: Victor Hugo’s Clue To Massively Exceeding Life Expectancy
Monday Jul 15, 2019
Monday Jul 15, 2019
When Victor Hugo was born, life expectancy at the time hovered between 30 and 40 years of age. How then, did people like Hugo go on to live to age 83? The author of Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is by no means alone.
You don’t have to be famous to dramatically outlive life expectancy, and wealth is not a precursor to longevity either. Nutrition is often thought to be the key driver, but we know that not to be the case.
Hugo buried four of his five children, and the only child to outlive him was a schizophreniac who lived and died in a mental institution.
So what is it? Why do people like Hugo not live just a few years past life expectancy, but decades longer?
The answers (well at least our thoughts) and more in this episode of 100 Not Out.

100NO 327: Conservative Courage – Resisting The Urge To Be Reckless
Monday Jul 08, 2019
Monday Jul 08, 2019
We have both had family members make some brave, bold decisions recently, and they are in the third act of life (aka they are not our children, but instead our parents).
Both examples of this conservative courage are on the back of houses being sold – and tie in with our regular conversation on “loving where you live”. At some stages, not loving where you live but “hanging in there” can pay great dividends. Being Stoic over Snap Happy and resisting the urge to be reckless can be just as revered.
Will this ever change? Or have the rules for successful living changed? Is being stoic and persevering something that we only get better at with age, or is it something we can learn and embody at any time?
All of this and more on the latest edition of 100 Not Out.

We’ve discussed many times before on this podcast just how important nutrition is for successful ageing, and also how it’s not the everything.
To dive deeper into this topic we bring on respected medical doctor Dr Alice, who featured on episode 256 of 100 Not Out alongside her inspirational mother Ada.
Today we talk about –
** The importance of nutrition
** The impact of stress, particularly when you’re eating well!
** The power of meditation and the art of being present
And so much more.
