100NO 277: MP’s Musings From Paris on Village Life, Movement & Moderation

Monday Jul 23, 2018
Hi 100 NOt Out listeners, Marcus here.
I’m in Paris for three more days before returning home and have had plenty of thoughts buzzing around over the past six weeks in Europe.
ON this episode I discuss three which have been major themes. The first revolves around the power of living in a village, the second is about my a-ha thoughts about movement, and the third about food.
I hope you enjoy this episode of 100 Not Out, recorded whilst watching the beautiful Eiffel Tower glitter in all her glory!

For the last 10 days Marcus and family have been in the Dordogne region of France, in the south west to be exact about 2 hours from Bordeaux and learning so much about the French culture.
If you’ve listened to 100 Not Out for a while or heard Marcus speak before, you’ll have heard of Jeanne Calment, the oldest human being ever to lived, making it to 122 years and 164 days.
The incredible Frenchwoman did this whilst smoking for 95 years, drinking port wine every night and eating a kilo of chocolate each week. This example is by no means a valid reason to start smoking or increase your chocolate or alcohol consumption, but it does beg the question —- WHY?
To have a chat about food, French culture and Jeanne Calment I am joined by Ian & Sara Fisk. Ian & Sara co-founded Le Chevrefuille – a beautiful farmstead, B&B and self-catering residence here in the Dordogne – and Cook Dordogne – a cooking school dedicated to helping people understand the French way of cooking and food preparation, especially in the Perigord region.

Hopgood’s first very successful play was And the Big Men Fly in 1963 produced by the Union Theatre Repertory Company. The script writer at the time was Brad Hopgood. The play was adapted for TV by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1973. In 1964, he followed with The Golden Legion of Cleaning Women. Our next guest is a big part of The Wellness Couch family who you may never of heard of … she’s not a podcaster or a health professional and has never been on one of our podcasts. But ask any of our long-time podcasters and they’ll all tell you about Tess Ley.
Tess has been to The Wellness Summit and The Wellness Breakthrough … she sees Damo for her regular chiropractic care … and has regular contact with many other listeners of the podcasts on The Couch.
In February this year … Tess – a wife and mother of two – sent Laurence, Brett, Damian and Marcus an email sharing in her upfront and almost darkly humorous way that she had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer.
At age 34, Tess is one of the more than 12 million people in our global village who will be diagnosed with cancer this year … and we believe she’s one of the more inspirational.
You can keep in touch with Tess on Instagram.
Below is a transcript of the Felt Sense Prayer which Tess reads.
The Felt Sense Prayer
I am the pain in your head, the knot in your stomach, the unspoken grief in your smile.
I am your high blood sugar, your elevated blood pressure, your fear of challenge, your lack of trust.
I am your hot flashes, your cold hands and feet, your agitation and your fatigue.
I am your shortness of breath, your fragile low back, the cramp in your neck, the despair in your sigh
I am the pressure on your heart, the pain down your arm, your bloated abdomen, your constant hunger.
I am where you hurt, the fear that persists, your sadness of dreams unfulfilled.
I am your symptoms, the causes of your concern, the signs of imbalance, your condition of dis-ease.
You tend to disown me, suppress me, ignore me, inflate me, coddle me, condemn me.
I am not coming forth for myself as I am not separate from all that is you.
I come to garner your attention, to enjoin your embrace so I can reveal my secrets.
I have only your best interests at heart as I seek health and wholeness by simply announcing myself.
You usually want me to go away immediately, to disappear, to sleek back into obscurity.
You mostly are irritated or frightened and many times shocked by my arrival.
From this stance you medicate in order to eradicate me.
Ignoring me, not exploring me, is your preferred response.
More times than not I am only the most recent notes of a long symphony, the most evident branches of roots that have been challenged for seasons.
So I implore you, I am a messenger with good news, as disturbing as I can be at times.
I am wanting to guide you back to those tender places in yourself,
the place where you can hold yourself with compassion and honesty.
If you look beyond my appearance you may find that I am a voice from your soul.
Calling to you from places deep within that seek your conscious alignment.
I may ask you to alter your diet, get more sleep, exercise regularly, breathe more consciously.
I might encourage you to see a vaster reality and worry less about the day to day fluctuations of life.
I may ask you to explore the bonds and the wounds of your relationships.
I may remind you to be more generous and expansive or to attend to protecting your heart from insult.
I might have you laugh more, spend more time in nature, eat when you are hungry and less when pained or bored, spend time every day, if only for a few minutes, being still.
Wherever I lead you, my hope is that you will realize that success will not be measured by my eradication, but by the shift in the internal landscape from which I emerge.
I am your friend, not your enemy. I have no desire to bring pain and suffering into your life.
I am simply tugging at your sleeve, too long immune to gentle nudges.
I desire for you to allow me to speak to you in a way that enlivens your higher instincts for self care.
My charge is to energize you to listen to me with the sensitive ear and heart
of a mother attending to her precious baby.
You are a being so vast, so complex, with amazing capacities for self-regulation and healing.
Let me be one of the harbingers that lead you to the mysterious core of your being
where insight and wisdom are naturally available when called upon with a sincere heart.

100NO 270: How To Stop Judging & Being More Accepting & Authentic
Monday Jun 04, 2018
Monday Jun 04, 2018
Judgement. It’s everywhere. You get judged on a daily basis, perhaps on a minute by minute basis, and mostly without your knowledge. Often you get judged by the people you know and love and that can hurt the most.
On this episode of 100 Not Out, we share some personal stories on being judged and what impact it can have on personal fulfillment.
We share our own tips on how to minimize judging (it will never be eliminated) and on developing the courage and resilience to be authentic and accepting.
A big thanks to Alice Murkies and Rhonda Hafey for being the catalysts to this conversation. Alice and Rhonda have both had their parents interviewed on 100 Not Out and are pictured here with Marcus.
Alice is the daughter of Ada Murkies, recipient of the Siberian Exile Cross for her heroics during the second World War. Rhonda is the daughter of football legend Tommy Hafey, who was featured on episode two of 100 Not Out and is still to this day the favourite episode of many loyal listeners.

A number of the graceful agers and 100 Not Outers we interview and speak about on the podcast love to sing and dance. We see the joy and love of singing and dancing in Ikaria on our Longevity Experience at the panigiris, and all longevity cultures have a strong element of singing in their community spirit.
To share with us why this is and how good singing is for personal wellness we’re going to chat with Deanna Kangas. Deanna is the Founder and Director of Voicehouse, Australia’s largest adult vocal studio.
Deanna started dancing at 3, playing the piano at 6 and singing at 8. She grew up watching musicals and having performance aspirations and has performed live in front of more than 40,000people.

100NO 268: Normie Rowe AM – The Original King Of Pop & 71 Not Out
Monday May 21, 2018
Monday May 21, 2018
We are extremely fortunate to have music royalty on 100 Not Out – a big shout out to Sam Gowing from Food Health Wealth for making this possible by falling in love with our guest (you may have heard Normie Rowe make an appearance on this episode of 100 Not Out!
Normie Rowe AM was Australia’s undisputed FIRST KING OF POP back in the 1960s. He was the first Australian artist to EVER have two TOP 3 singles simultaneously for three consecutive weeks.
Normie Rowe & The Playboys supported Roy Orbison in the US, represented Australia alongside The Seekers at Expo 67 in Montreal, and lay claim to the biggest selling Australian single of the 1960s with Que Sera Sera.
Today’s interview is not all about music though, because behind the glitz of the glamour of being a rock star, Normie has experienced more than fair share of hardships. To share the ups and the downs of an incredible life that is still going strong at 71 Not Out, it’s a very warm welcome to the great Normie Rowe AM.

100NO 267: How To Smell A Rat In The Wellness World
Monday May 14, 2018
Monday May 14, 2018
There are so many wellness “experts” these days it can be difficult to know who to follow. On this episode we discuss what some of the signs are of a rat in the wellness world. Who can you trust and who can you unfollow? Here are some of the signs we discuss –
How long have they been eating that way / moving that way / thinking that way? Is this just their latest fad or crash diet that they are sharing?
How long have they been doing what you WANT to do?
Is the expert prepared to be WRONG or are they constantly defending their beliefs?
How do they look? If they are a “health” expert, are they a picture of health?
How much of their PERSONAL life do they share? Their family don’t have to be in the public eye but they can’t be a secret either.
Are they nice human beings with a pleasing personality? They don’t have to be an extrovert, but experts and mentors are better when they’re decent human beings.
Do they think they’re better than you? If so, conversation over.
Enjoy this episode of 100 Not Out!

100NO 266: Herbalism – Fad Or Fantastic with Naked Naturopath Mel Gearing
Monday May 07, 2018
Monday May 07, 2018
Marcus often wonders if modern herbalism is just another fad or way to make people feel like they’re not doing something they think they should. We look at the 100 Not Outers and wonder how much herbalism is a part of their life, and if it’s something only to be used in times of poor health or as part of a healthy lifestyle. To discuss all of this and more we welcome one of the newest members of The Wellness Couch family.
Mel Gearing is host of The Naked Naturopath podcast, and apart from being a naturopath she is a qualified nutritionist and clinical herbalist and the founder of MG herbs. She’s written three books on the topic and sees clients in her practice in Newcastle.
